The Ancestral Puebloans built Cliff Palace and many similar pueblos (Spanish for "towns") nearly 800 years ago (early- to mid-1200's). This particular pueblo is located in what is now called the four corners region of the United States (click here to view a map of the region). There are many other Ancestral Puebloan ruins in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona.
Given the tools they had to use, building places like Cliff Palace was an amazing accomplishment. Ever since European-Americans discovered the ruins of these places in the late 1800's, people have been curious about the ruins and the people who built them:
  • Who were these people?
  • Where did they come from?
  • How they were able to build such places and why did they build them?
  • How were they able to live in this region, a place that seems harsh to us now?
  • Why did they leave this area and where did they go?

You are probably curious about some of these questions, too. The photos and information on this web site will help you explore some of these questions.
