| The Doing
History/Keeping the Past Project is a curriculum and materials development project. It is
creating instructional materials to help K-8 teachers engage students in historical
inquiry and integrate historic preservation education into the social studies curriculum.
The current focus of the project is Colorado history and selected historic sites within
the state. The project is supported by a grant from the State Historical Fund of the
Colorado Historical Society. |
| The focus of
the curriculum is a set of historical photographs, written primary sources, and case
studies of historic preservation. The materials are available to teachers and students on
CD-ROM disks and via the Hewit Institute Website. Students will be able to "do"
Colorado history by examining, interpreting, and writing about themes represented by these
materials. The materials also will serve as points of departure to engage students in
historical preservation activities. |
| The project
has developed materials for six topics in all. A CD-ROM (in both PC and Mac platforms)
and a ring-binder Teacher's Guide (which includes lesson plans and primary source excepts)
comprise the materials for each of the following five topics. Each of these topics is also
available on the Doing History/Keeping the Past website. (There are also selected lesson
plans for each topic on the website.) |
- Colorado Indians
- Mining
- Farming and Ranching
- Colorado Cities
- Twentieth Century Colorado
A sixth topic, Historic Preservation Activities, is only available
in a ring-binder Teacher's Guide (although selected lesson plans are available on the
website).
Virtual field trips and the topic
"Trappers and Traders" are available only on the Doing History/Keeping the Past website http://hewit.unco.edu/dohist/ (click on
appropriate links). |
