The William E. Hewit Institute for History and Social Science Education was established in June 1998 to support K-12 education in history and the social sciences. Located on the campus of the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, it primarily serves schools, teachers and students in Colorado and the Rocky Mountains-Plains region. The primary focus of Hewit Institute programs is teacher education, materials development, and research in the teaching and learning of history and the social sciences. The major materials-development initiative currently underway is the Doing History/Keeping the Past Project.
The Institute is funded in part by an endowment from the estate of William E. Hewit. Its programs are primarily supported by grants. Recent grantors include the National Science Foundation, the National Geographic Society Education Foundation, the Colorado Geographic Education Fund, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, the Colorado Department of Education, the State Historical Fund of the Colorado Historical Society, and the University of Northern Colorado Foundation.
